ArteKino 2024
Through its four programming strands—ArteKino Selection, ArteKino Classics, Arte Focus, and ArteKino Festival—ArteKino celebrates the richness and diversity of European cinema, offering audiences a carefully curated selection of both contemporary and classic films. This year, the consortium behind the initiative—ARTE GEIE, ARTE France Cinéma, and the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes—presents a compelling lineup, spanning from timeless masterpieces to bold new voices in filmmaking. ArteKino Festival showcases contemporary gems such as Amanda by Carolina Cavalli (2022) and Pink Moon by Floor van der Meulen (2022), highlighting the fresh perspectives of a new generation of directors. ArteKino Classics revisits cinematic treasures like The Tin Drum by Volker Schlöndorff (1979), Federico Fellini’s Intervista and The Swindle, as well as King of Hearts by Philippe de Broca. Meanwhile, ArteKino Selection brings thought-provoking works such as Models by Ulrich Seidl (1999), Lines of Wellington by Valeria Sarmiento, and Elles by Małgorzata Szumowska, starring Juliette Binoche. With more than 100 hours of programming subtitled in English, Spanish, Italian, and Polish (in addition the French and German) all available online for free, ArteKino strives to engage and inspire audiences across Europe. A strong commitment to female filmmakers is also at the heart of the initiative, with 60% of the films in ArteKino Selection and ArteKino Festival directed by talented women. We also highlight the work of female filmmakers in our Classics programming, featuring directors such as Chantal Akerman last year. Thanks to meticulous editorial curation and targeted communication efforts, ArteKino has continued to expand its reach, recording a 13% growth in audience engagement in 2023. ArteKino is proud to be supported by the European Union’s “Creative Europe Media” programme.
ArteKino Classics
ArteKino Classics offers rarely shown and significant titles from the rich European film heritage, providing a new perspective on European film history from 1945 to 1995.
ArteKino Festival
The ArteKino festival takes place once a year from December 1st to December 31st, showcasing a selection of 12 European films directed by young directors. During the festival period, the public can vote for their favourite films on the website.
ArteKino Selection
The ArteKino catalogue includes a monthly film rendez-vous, the ArteKino Selection, featuring contemporary films.
ArteKino Focus
ArteKino Focus is a film programme centred around a renowned filmmaker, allowing the audience to explore their work from different perspectives. In 2024, a major auteur cinema cycle, for example, was dedicated to Chantal Akerman and offered an immersive experience on the arte.tv website.
